Hanoi Panic! popped up again last month with a second issue after a three-year hiatus, fortified by a larger editorial team and a refashioned priority: The LGBT community. The theme for last month’s issue, ‘You Are Not Alone’, speaks to Hanoi Panic!’s overarching goal to foster visibility and solidarity of the LGBT community in Hanoi.
Rumor has it, and we haven’t been able to say otherwise, it’s the first zine to hit Hanoi. It’s produced in the photocopied, cut and paste design inspired by zines in 90’s America that nurtured the Riot Grrl movement and their push to promote feminism in a way that made it accessible to everyone, and empowered the idea that anyone can inspire change with the simplest of tools.
Founder Mon Lucont has used his brand Hanoi Panic! for a few projects already, though perhaps none have fit the title as aptly as the LGBT issues. Hanoi Panic! hopes to become a platform on which to facilitate discussion, share stories, and inspire others to embrace their own Queer creative spirit at what Mon calls, “the beginning of the Queer revolution in Hanoi.”
