About Us

& Of Other Things was started because of a shared love of magazines and the magazine format. And because few such independent content providers across art and culture featured articles about Hanoi or even Vietnam. From 2014 to 2017 we wrote, recorded and spoke to people across the creative fields in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to find out about influences close to these practitioners’ homes and from around the Southeast and East Asia region.

& Of Other Things featured art and artists from across the spectrum, design – be it graphic design, product design or fabric design, photography, film, documentaries, music, sound art, video, food, fashion, issues, environment, facts, architecture, opinions, writing, unique people, thinkers, doers, makers…and so on. We also wrote of other things.

Though our active work ceased after three years for a whole host of reasons, the content that was created during our times endures. It is chronicle and testimony to three years in an eclectic and underestimated art scene and it is here now archived to browse and discover.

We are grateful to everyone who made this endeavour possible. To those giving their time, work and skill and those letting us tell their stories, take their pictures and share their creative output.

    Hi

I am very impressed with the site and the depth and passion it puts into each articles, very interesting and different.
I just wonder why a big part of performing arts and performing artists such as theatre and dance are not obviously thought about or mentioned in the introduction :

” & Of Other Things will feature art and artists from across the spectrum, design – be it graphic design, product design or fabric design, photography, film, documentaries, music, sound art, video, food, fashion, issues, environment, facts, architecture, opinions, writing, unique people, thinkers, doers, makers…and so on. ”

From the navigation menu it is also clear that the focus is more on visual art, sound and film. As a promoter for performing art in Vietnam I have been questioning the lack of attention, funding, and support to the performing art sectors especially from independent writers, funders, promoters.. May be I can learn a few things from asking you the same question too.

    Love and Respect

Thanks so much for your comment, we’re really happy that you’re enjoying reading the magazine. Our initial response was ‘oh, that’s just an oversight’. Which it was, but of course that isn’t the whole answer. We wouldn’t never have missed out ‘film’ or ‘music’ in the same way. Performing art and dance was in the initial list of headings but got lost along the way. Perhaps, honestly, it doesn’t feel as though as much is happening in performing art here as other disciplines.

We have however been working with choreographer Arco Renz and Hanoi Stardust which we’re pretty excited about. They were kind enough to give us great behind the scenes access and have been incredibly generous with their time. That will be on the site late September.

And, more importantly, perhaps you could help us remedy our oversight? Tell us what is happening that deserves greater coverage and recognition. Or perhaps you’d like to share your views and insight more widely and write for us? We’d love to hear from you again – contribute@andofotherthingsarchived.com
