Vietnamese artists at the exhibition

Art Stage

Words by Sadie Christie

The annual and immense Art Stage Singapore is happening this month with over 152 international galleries from 27 different countries participating in the fair. Curator Khim Ong has selected three galleries to present four Vietnamese artists in 2015: CUC Gallery in Hanoi with Do Hoang Tuong and Richard Stretimatter-Tran, Galerie Quynh in HCMC and artist Hoang Duong Cam and FOST Gallery, Singapore with Oanh Phi Phi.

All four artists are showing as part of ‘Eagles Fly, Sheep Flock – biological imprints: artistic practices in Southeast Asia’, an exhibition which is an entry point to art from the South East Asia region. It explores the influences and experimentation within both personal history and broader cultural aspects that have shaped artists work.

Artist Hoang Duong Cam for instance compares and relates the faces of prominent historical and contemporary figures reconstructed in the likeness of his own history, while Oanh Phi Phi explores the beautiful possibilities of lacquer by taking it out of its context in traditional painting and meditating upon it in a contemporary way on both a macro and micro scale – from the creation of entire spaces, to an examination of its minute characteristics.

Art Stage Singapore remains unprecedented as Asia’s leading contemporary art event. Setting the bar again this year, around 70 percent of exhibitors are galleries from within South East Asia and Asia pacific region, while the remainder of exhibitors are leading international galleries. The comprehensive array of art, talks, panel discussions and activities foster an incredibly important platform for artists, art experts and enthusiasts to network and create a dialogue, most importantly between the diverse and disconnected art scenes of Asia, and outward into the global arena.
