Do you consider yourself an artist?

Didn’t make it last year, but did this year: Đặng Việt Linh

'Bữa tiệc của rừng' - 60 x 80 - Sơn trên Giấy dó - 2014

‘The Jungle’s Celebration’ – 60 x 80 – Paint on Do paper – 2014

&: How did you hear about the Open Exhibition and why did you decide to submit your work?

Đặng Việt Linh: Workroom Four sent me an email to inform me of this year’s Open Exhibition after my visit to their exhibition in 2013. I also got the information through Hanoi Grapevine.

I decided to send my artwork to this exhibition because this is an open event with various visual languages, it can create connections among artists, artworks and the audience. Also I hope to bring my creation to a wider range of people and offer them a multidimensional viewpoint on modern visual art and add to the understanding of what modern artists are trying to say through their works.

&: Do you consider yourself an artist?

Đặng Việt Linh: An artist always comes with an art genre and style. It takes a lot to become an artist, talent, style, experience and most importantly knowledge about art. I am young, I’ve worked in art for 7 years, but I don’t know art that well yet, so I consider myself a creator only, not yet an artist.

&: When and where do you feel the most creative?

Đặng Việt Linh: Once you choose to pursue art, passion is all you care about. I have passion everywhere I go. Just observing the wonderful work of mother nature and going about my everyday bring me many new ideas and thoughts. That’s why I feel inspired to paint wherever I go and whenever (I usually spend 5 to 8 hours a day working on my art).

&: What is art in your opinion?

Đặng Việt Linh: The definition of art varies in different times, geographic characters and cultures. In my opinion art is the reflection of impartial reality. Artworks (paintings, music, stage plays, performance…) communicate an artist’s feelings for beauty. It must contain ideological and aesthetic value, as well as a spirit that fits its time and morality.
