Curated: The Pinhole Perspective

By andofotherthings · On 25 Sep, 2014

The Pinholes are to Hanoi what The Beatles are to America: our favourite rock ‘n’ roll fancy dress wearing group who we like to scream loudly to on stage and jump around with at the after party. They’ve been in Hanoi twice already for CAMA Fest and ASEAN Pride, and are sure to hop over again from Singapore to blow us away with matching pinstripe suits and vibing songs.

For this curation, they’ve picked 5 tracks of Singaporean psychedelic surf-pop, especially for your listening pleasure. Get a sense of their inspiration and get down to their track picks!

Artist: The Quests
Track: Shanty
Place: Singapore

The forefather and premier of SG (Singapore) popular music back in the 60s, their original instrumental song ‘Shanty’ knocked The Beatles off the chart in SG. We love them because they make us proud to sound like a Singapore band, and are full of quality and great original songs.

Artist: The Swallows
Track: La Aube
Place: Singapore

The Swallows are one of the most successful Singaporean rock bands from the 60s. They have cut many records and were on the scene for many years. Kassim Selamat has one of the most popular Bawean hits ever, “La Aube” (La-O-Be); still a classic today. Another hit is “Nga Lompak A-Go-Go”.
●●

Artist: Ismail Harun
Track: Tolong Damaikan
Place: Singapore

The late ‘Tom Jones of Singapore’ did a lot of psychedelic tunes. And he also made some chart-topping hits with a string of various original songs.

Artist: The Stoned Revivals
Track: Stoned Alleycat
Place: Singapore

The Pinholes never would have happened without this group. SG’s best kept secret, with lots of cool song-writing and musicianship. A true void deck rubber soul band.

Artist: Force Vomit
Track: The Kids Who WTF
Place: Singapore

The Best Surf Punk Rocker Band In SG from the 90s till now. 4.5 million Singaporean People can’t be wrong. Tell us if it’s true!
