The Whimsical World of Supachet Bhumakarn

Thai artist Supachet Bhumakarn’s flights of fancy

By Nguyễn Hương Ly

Walking into Supachet Bhumakarn’s shop and studio in the center of Chang Mai feels as though you’ve stepped into a childlike daydream, where whimsical stories thrive on canvasses of dreamy colours and the tails of three famously fabled characters; an elephant, a rabbit and a bird.

If the stories have any sort of lesson, it is simply to wander frequently through the imagination. The image of the elephant has become a signature of Bhukmakarn’s work and a representation of himself within each story. He says when difficulties in his life arise, he holds on to freedom and his imagination, the characters and their adventures, resulting in deeply personal paintings that feel playfully light.

Bhumakarn also creates handmade crafts that see his characters realised in postcards, coasters, cups and more. His most recent exhibition is a series of black and white etchings being presented in Taiwan at the Safulak Cafe until the end of June.
