This is an age when ‘everyone is a photographer’. Taking a decent photo can be achieved with the press of a button, the final image exactly as the scene appeared through the viewfinder plus you can stick it up on your Facebook wall before you’ve even left the venue. Instant gratification.
Pinhole photography is different. It requires a bit more involvement with the process, a basic understanding of how photography works, a bit of patience and trial and error. It uses film, which needs to be developed and the images printed. The end results aren’t always good or consistent but sometimes they can be beautiful, dreamlike and atmospheric.
Making your own pinhole camera is one step further to involving yourself in the process. Going back to the basic elements of photography – a (pin)hole, a camera obscura or dark chamber and some film – cameras can be made out of almost anything.
