Things of Beauty: Saigon tile patterns turned graphic design
Life is infinitely better when the most mundane, every day necessities we can’t do without are beautiful too. Like a floor. All the steps you take are enhanced when the floor you’re walking on is pleasing to the eye. And Vietnam does beautiful floors. The colonial-era floor tiles are often neglected – which adds a certain charm – though now gaining wider appreciation.
Ho Chi Minh City based designer Giang Nguyễn has given 30 patterns of tiles a digital once over and published them in a pleasing to the eye book ‘Tiles of Saigon’. What’s left are patterns of a modern, timeless appeal. A reminder that some things survive the ages.
