Yang Liu draws the differences
Words by Rose Arnold
Graphic designer Yang Liu was born in China but moved to Germany as a teenager. Drawing on her personal experiences of the two cultures, and the differences between them, Liu turned these observations into a series of infographics. Complex ideas are beautifully distilled into visually striking pairs of graphics published in a book, ‘East Meets West’. And yes, they’re generalisations but for anyone with experience of both the east and the west there are likely to be elements that you recognise. Certainly the reception has been hugely positive. The series has been exhibited across the world, finding popularity and striking a chord with audiences in both the east and the west.
Yang Liu is based in Berlin, a professor and the head of department of communication design at Berlin technical art university she also founded an agency in the city, Yang Liu Design. She has recently turned her keen observational gaze on men and women, and gender stereotypes, with a new series of infographics ‘Man Meets Woman’.
