Curated: The Low-down on Folk Music in Singapore

By & Of Other Things · On 14 Sep, 2014

Leslie Low from The Observatory and Hanging Up The Moon shares his concentric circle of folk artists currently in Singapore.

When musician and singer Leslie Low’s resonating voice isn’t lending itself to Singaporean indie rock and electronica band, The Observatory, who recently graced the HRC stage, he is busying himself in indie folk with his band Hanging Up The Moon and preparing his soon to be released solo folk album. Leslie compiled a list of the folk music appearing in Singapore for & Of Other Things, including one of his own anticipated songs off his new album, available 14 September.

“What I know about the folk scene here is limited to a small circle of collaborators and friends. It was through some performances I did with Hanging Up The Moon and Piblokto that led me to The Diarists, Hell Low, Azmyl Yunor and Anise. I’ve always had a profound respect and love for the folk genre. Its unadorned simplicity resonates deeply with me—skeletal and bare. This playlist is by no means extensive, if you looked hard enough, you would also find other small circles of good music being written and expressed. This is what’s been happening these past months from our corner of Southeast Asia.”
